as you may know, i've been looking to move for a while now, so this calendar is my wish for a new home -- and of course my wish for you to enjoy your nesting place, wherever it may be! it includes materials birds commonly use to make nests (feathers, grasses, twigs, string). you'll also find homes like igloos, teepees, trees, and mountains. and last but not least my dream house with my two happy dogs hanging out in their dream yard. printed on both natural and avocado colored linen.

by the yard showcases 25 artists who all had the same instructions: using fabric create something that can be sold by the yard, at least 5 yards long. so here's mine, pictured above: i cut strips of organic cotton flannel, hand-painted each piece with water-based inks (including neons & metallics), braided them to fit as bracelets, then tied each bracelet together to create a colorful garland. imagine decorating a party with this garland, and as each guest leaves they get to take a bit of the party with them - one of these colorful bracelets. ti piace?

first off, if you haven't already checked out part 1 do it now! here we continue this spectacular evening for the chez panisse 40th anniversary benefit 'flamenco y paella' dinner at the sueuga's.

followed by the hosts toasting the chez panisse foundation & the many local business who donated to the event (acme bread, tokyo fish market, beaune imports, among others)

holy moly, i think this was my dream dessert (wish i could crinkle my nose like in 'i dream of jeannie' and give you all a taste!)

from the top, a crunchy & light caramelized almond torte, candied orange-peel, tiny shortbread cookie, dark chocolate covered toffee square, homemade ice milk (like ice cream) covered with a fresh peach & blackberry compote..!

{footnote: my mom always taught me to take a ton of pictures - the more you take, the more good ones you get. i certainly agree, but the tiny problem with taking so many photos is that then you have to sift through them all! - and worse, choose which to use! ;)}

okay, i'll admit it: i watch a LOT of movies. really. no, really. with so many solo hours of printing, packaging, callligraphy, etc., having a movie on keeps me going. i watch it all, though have a particular soft-spot for anything italian, period films, and the classics. anyway, last week at sf magazine's fallfest i had some stylin' customers, and this gorgeous girl in her fabulous vintage floppy hat (also perfect for the bright & sunny day) got me thinking..

these beautiful photos are from erica tanov's catalog. i love erica's style, from her clothes to her interiors -- here's just another bit of her magic. i've been to this property, called the spring mansion, and its like stepping back in time. unfortunately it was abandoned for many many years and is in pretty bad shape, but with a little work (okay a lot), wouldn't it be an incredible wedding venue?!

yes, my dream house does exist! and it belongs to my good friends, the sueuga family. anthony sueuga is a contractor, specializing in tile and stone, and designed and built their home from the ground up in the berkeley hills overlooking the bay. and boy has this house got it all: style, style and more style.

the central courtyard brings the outdoors into the home - and isn't the tiling just beautiful? below, the kitchen with plenty of prep space, where the magic begins!

i love the attention to lighting throughout the house. besides the abounding natural light, all of the overhead fixtures have dimmers, and at dinner parties there are candles lit on the table.

its hard to capture all of the cozy spaces there are for hanging out, but its really one of the things i appreciate every time i'm a guest -- its like the house was designed to nurture connection.

huge windows throughout let in incredible light. the wood floors in these rooms were once the floors of a high school basketball court, the beams from a submerged sugar factory.

the house is mostly furnished with antique market finds and re-upolstered hand-me-downs - adds such warmth, don't you think?

the master bathroom, tiled from top to bottom with marble.

anthony fabricated the dark marble himself from huge 300 pound slabs (recycled from one of the oldest post offices in san francisco).

oh yea, and besides being a sought-after contractor, anthony is also a food and wine buff, who cooks a delectable 100 person paella on his custom built metal fire pit, and who will put together phenomenal custom boxes of wines just for you, tailored to your specific tastes! you can contact him here: asueuga@yahoo.com & (510) 301-8482

Terrain is such a GORGEOUS shop -- i'm so excited to be working with them!! besides carrying my stationery since they opened, i've just finished an exclusive pair of madras tea towels for their new fall season collection. above are the two photos of swatches for fall they originally sent me, and from that i came up with several color options from which they chose these two. the linen i used for these tea towels is a bit thicker than my normal stock and sooooo luxurious! they also carry my bon appetit napkins and you can read an interview they did with me here.

good work habits

i've been doing a bunch of interviews lately (will let you know when published), and one thing i find i always share are my daily runs and walks with the dogs in tilden. so i took these photos to give you a peek at a very important part of my work -- i.e. not working! my guess is that this is true no matter what your profession, but as an artist and a small business owner i can tell you that this time in the hills with the dogs and the occasional little brown bunny, the sound of the wind in the trees, and green all around, really truly helps to 'keep calm and carry on' amidst the challenges (stress, chaos, never-ending to-do's,etc) of the work day ahead.

DIY washi tags

yes, i'm still in love with washi tape.. i've been making these little gift tags to package online orders with, and have gotten a couple thank you's mentioning how much you liked the little tags -- and they are soooo easy to make!

so here's a little step-by-step tutorial: 1. tape up a sheet of card stock (also nice on kraft paper) - any colors, any pattern, you can't go wrong! 2. i used a paper cutter here, eyeballing 1" strips, then used scissors to chop them about 1.5" long (pictured here only a few, though i got plenty more out of my sheet). 3. snip the edges into an arrow. 4. punch a hole (i like this craft store hole-punch cause it has a tiny hole). 5. take some twine (or string or ribbon) and knot around the hole. 6. attach to gift, and ta-da!

such a sweet baby shower invitation project! with baby giraffes as the inspiration i illustrated this cute guy and his little bird friends, and screen-printed the 5x7 folded cards in 4 colors. For the calligraphy i used gouache, then wrapped each envelope in antique twine that i tied in back and sealed with wax.

i was so excited to receive this calendar from angela liguori (of carta, inc.) in the mail! it's soooo beautiful and comes packaged very sweetly in a muslin bag, and with a LINEA CARTA wall display kit for cute and easy hanging ;) the calendar includes 6 cards that are printed on both sides to create a perpetual calendar with all 12 months -- so cool! it is a limited edition (see her blog for more info) and available to purchase (quick before they're gone!) at angela's shop. The amazing landscape is an illustration by italian artist guido scarabottolo.

holiday crafting

we had our annual ornament swap at the castle in the air holiday dinner tonight.. so many beautiful and unique handmade treasures! here was my contribution: a little fox made of paper clay (so fun to use!) and painted with acrylic ink and gouache, measuring about 5"x2.5". and the ladybug clothespin for clipping on the tree.

in may i brought LINEA CARTA to the NY national stationery show (our booth above). i joined MIXED CO ., repped and put together beautifully by meg mateo ilasco (of mateo ilasco), and had a super successful trip. along with Mateo Ilasco i was joined by Good on Paper, Nantaka Joy, Laurel Denise, and Allymoon.

i have been a very busy bee this month! this wedding set is Hand Made. with a capital H and a capital M: all custom illustration and calligraphy, each piece screen-printed, corners rounded, each envelope lined (what a project!), wrapped with birds nest twine - and then wrapped again.. addressed in calligraphy with gouache mixed to match. and finally wax sealed. with an embossed dove :)
